Victory in the Court of Appeal for Sharon Shoesmith – but children like baby Peter Connelly remain the losers

Sharon Shoesmith has won her case in the Court of Appeal over her sacking following the abysmal failure of her department in the Baby P case.  Shoesmith was sacked after social workers in her department at Haringey Council failed to act to save 17 month old Peter Connelly’s life in 2007. Despite her social workers making over sixty visits to the child’s home they missed – or ignored – countless injuries on his body and the fact that a violent, psychopathic maniac by the name of Stephen Barker was living in the same house with Peter’s mother, Tracey Connelly.

Standing on the steps outside the Court of Appeal today, Shoesmith looks very pleased with herself to the point of being smug. The High Court has agreed she was dismissed in the wrong manner, however they are wrong where the words ‘Unlawful and Void‘ are concerned. So what if Shoesmith was ‘highly thought of at Haringey’ , so she had to work with ‘budget constraints’. She talks about social care workers being ‘vulnerable‘… so are 17 month old babies in the care of violent sadists. The words she uses to describe her situation – ‘treated unlawfully, made a scapegoat, sacked unfairly and unlawfully’ tragically describe little Peter Connelly’s short life. This child was made a scapegoat by care workers and doctors who must be either blind and/or plain stupid.

Shoesmith thanks her family for their support – so she may well do – she has a family who cares for her, Peter Connelly did not. Nobody cared about Peter Connelly until he was dead. When Shoesmith receives the massive compensation payout she is no doubt due for her troubles, I hope the innocent and tortured blue eyes of Peter Connelly are seared into her conscience whenever she spends a penny of it. This is a woman who could not save one child from a heinous death because of ‘budget constraints’  but has thought nothing about funding a three year lawsuit to fight her own corner…
