I have been following the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition in recent weeks and I was so astounded by the sheer talent, and the passion, of those entrants. These kids were no more than eighteen years old and all displayed a drive and ambition that I wish was prevalent in more British youth these days.

But of course, that is what music does for you - if only more parents would make the sacrifice and put their money towards music lessons for their kids rather than booze, fags, Wii’s and cheap holidays to tacky Spanish resorts.

Young Peter Moore, aged just 12 years old, became the youngest winner of this highly regarded competition by impressing the judges with his ability on the trombone. He started playing at six and six years later has the maturity and skill of a seasoned professional.

His parents are brass players; the whole family play music and this is the key to this boy’s ability, success and confidence in himself.

It just proves that the family who plays together stays together.
