The other night we went out for a meal in a very nice restaurant, along with the kids too. We sat and chatted among ourselves and the two little one’s made use of the crayons and paper thoughtfully provided by the staff. I noticed another family arrive and get seated at a table very near to us; the couple had two daughters in their mid to late teens and as soon as they sat down out came the bloody mobile phones.
For close to two hours those two girls sat hunched over their respective phones texting madly away, giggling each time a message arrived, then tapping away furiously with their thumbs again. The only time they raised their heads was to put a fork of food into their mouths then back to the phones again…the parents seemed used to it and ignored them. Personally it irritated the hell out of me; it irritates the hell out of me every time someone sitting near me on a bus, a train or in a cafe just sits doubled over their phone ‘tap, tap tapping’ away for unbelievable lengths of time. Don’t these people ever get thumb-cramp?
Maybe it is because we must be the only family on earth who do not own mobile phones; we are quite happy not to and cannot see us conforming with the rest of society for a long time yet. For that case we also live quite happily without a Wii and a PS3; we don’t have a plasma TV or home cinema system and I have no interest in going around plugged into an iPod either. I have made the transition into the 21st century quite comfortably thankyou.
