The worlds oldest photograph?

I was reading an article today regarding what is said to be possibly the worlds oldest photograph – it is a 175 year old photo of a leaf taken by the pioneer of photography Henry Fox Talbot. Henry is credited with taking the worlds first photographs in the 1830′s.

On the left is the photo said to be 175 years old.

Now, fascinating as this is, I think I can match this with something just as interesting and historic…

In 1839 my Great-Great-Great Grandmother Mary Hamilton was aged just 14 when she was visiting the German city of Dresden with her family on a holiday away from their home in Ireland. During the visit she sat for a studio portrait and this photo is said to be the very first portrait photo ever taken – it was taken in 1839.

This was taken by the Feich-Hanfstaengh Hofphotograph. Dresden. I am very proud of this; how many people have a picture of an ancestor from five generations ago?
