The saddest statistics of all

You would think that with all the information available to women these days regarding the dangers of drug taking during pregnancy that some of the information would be heeded. You would think that females these days have developed some common sense; you would think that they would give things just a tiny bit of thought before inflicting their destructive and filthy drug habit and lifestyle on their own innocent baby.

Not so. At least not in the United Kingdom by any measure. In the last five years the number of babies born to drug addicted females has almost doubled with a high percentage of those poor children born with their mother’s addiction; news like this leaves you wondering just what kind of society we have allowed to develop – and why on earth it is even tolerated.

One would think if these women were capable of ingesting regular supplies of whatever-drug they are hooked on that they could also get themselves hooked on the contraceptive pill at the same time!

Once you see just one newborn baby suffering from withdrawals you will never ever forget it. I have seen one case and in twenty years I have never forgotten the sound of that baby’s high pitched distressed squeals. They don’t ‘cry’ they ‘squeal’…and they do it continually, in great pain, for days and sometimes weeks on end. His useless, tattoo-covered ‘mother’ just stood by his cradle in the hospital nursery and stared at him – bored witless she obviously was.

It seems that everyone has rights these days. Fine, if individuals wish to rot their insides with substances then let them do it and rot away on their own. But they should never be allowed to inflict such pain and degredation on an innocent baby and get away with it.  I am not alone in believing that drug addicts and babies do not mix; to me they should not even be allowed to take those babies home from the hospital. They do not deserve the privilege of motherhood nor do their babies deserve to be handed over to a drug addict to be starved, neglected and abused - as we know is happening on a scale that is immoral and unforgivable.

To me the only tragedy of drug addiction is that it does not render addicts completely and utterly sterile.
