As you will know my son William is now living in Australia and everything is working out wonderfully for him. He has a girlfriend now…Mum has been ‘displaced’ and another female has taken his affections, oh well, it had to happen some time.
I was chatting with her this morning and I told her he had better be treating her nicely or else he would have to answer to me!
She said he was the sweetest, kindest guy she had ever met and she had never been so happy…ahhh young love, ain’t it sweet? but her words really hit home to me in more ways than one. It appears that all my words over the years have found a chord.
As a mother I have tried to teach my boys many things since they were babies; sit up straight at the table; always say please and thankyou; be honest in what you say and do (sometimes they are too honest!); treat other people as you would like to be treated (thanks to the Ten Commandments for that one); always put the toilet seat down when you are finished (okay, this is a hard lesson to teach males)…but there is one other lesson I concentrated on more than any other…
Be nice to the girls…and always be kind to your wife. Happily, William has taken those words on board and has turned out to be the respectful and kind young man I always envisaged he would be. I know that his brothers will follow suit.
As a woman, not just a mother, I feel I have given him the most important lesson in life…kindness.
