That Termonfeckin town!

The easter break is almost at an end so we decided to take the kids for a bit of a history lesson today – nice weather and all – and took off down south for a visit to the site of the Battle of the Boyne at Oldbridge. Driving the route to Dublin is not one of my favourite things to do as that part of the Republic of Ireland is not the most charming part of the country scenery-wise but it does have it’s little gems here and there. The motorway makes the drive even more boring but it does cut a lot of time off the trip.

We stopped at the Oldbridge Estate (below) and saw the new visitors centre where they are building a memorial park to commemorate the Battle of the Boyne in 1690…which is nice of the Irish considering it is not something they tend to celebrate – they like to do that here in the North.

It still has some finishing touches being added but in a year I’d say it will be something really special. The grounds are beautiful and we had a picnic lunch before taking a wander around. There’s a tea pavillion which is kind of pricey and they sell stuff you could easily pack in a picnic basket yourself for much less. Word of advice – don’t visit straight after the rains as the fields are muddy, very muddy! Afterwards we took a drive and came across this town which has a name that always makes me laugh…

Termonfeckin! no – I’m not swearing a-la Father Ted…that’s the name of the town. Above is some local scenery to show that the region is quite pretty, but where did that name come from??? we use it as an acceptable curse word…“that termonfeckin thing!!!”

So, if you are driving down to Dublin – or on your way up North – drop by and say hello to Termonfeckin…without the exclamation mark :)
