Since my son William returned to Australia he has wasted no time at all in re-establishing his life and getting on with things. Life is so busy for him now I almost need to make an appointment to have a chat on the phone with him! It’s all good news anyway and it’s great to hear that he is happy.
He has enlisted in the Army reserves in order to earn some part-time cash and is attending regular job interviews in order to gain fulltime employment. I notice he is striking the same problem that I encountered when I was that age, and it is problem peculiar to Australia. It seems that once you hit the age of twenty it gets harder to find a job, employers seem to be still wanting to only employ under 18′s – it’s cheaper for them you see. They employ a staff of teens on a casual hourly basis, who can be sacked at random, rather than employ an ‘older’ permanent part/fulltime staff member. It was n;t fair back then and it remains very unfair now. I notice in the UK this sort of thing does not happen; in Tesco I worked alongside women who were well over middle age and you just would not see such women employed in Woolworths or Coles in Australia.
William also has acquired a girlfriend. I didn’t think it would take long for this to happen as he is a very sociable fellow and good looking to boot – very handsome indeed. I always used to wonder what girls my sons would be attracted to and more especially how they would treat them but I no longer worry. I always impressed on my boys one golden rule… ‘ be kind to the girls and be kind to your wife ’. Thankfully it has sunk in as I have seen how polite they are with females in general and it just goes to show it is not really what they hear from you but more what they ‘see’. Leading by example is the key here and if you have ever wondered why some men treat women like rubbish have a look, if you can, at how their mother was treated by their father – or other men in general. They copy what they see.
