I am not one to lecture people about health issues but just recently I read of a few cases where relatively young people - in their 40’s - have suffered sudden and fatal heart attacks.
The number of people suffering from heart disease, particularly undiagnosed heart disease is growing, and I just thought I would take a minute to write something which I feel is important.
One of the most common conditions which is a foreunner to cardiac arrest is cardiac arrythmia - irregular heartbeat. Many of us have experienced palpitations at some stage - too much strong coffee, sudden stress and raised blood pressure will bring them on and it can be quite frightening. These days when this is a chronic condition doctors treat the patient with implanted ICDs which detect the slightest difference in heart rate and then ‘zap’ it back into rhythm in seconds. These little devices are saving many lives.
I read a leaflet not too long ago detailing simple tips on what to do if you are, say, driving a car and you feel that tightness or pressure in your chest - you cough.

The reason it is said to help is because it causes the muscles around the heart to constrict and relax, which is what they do when a person coughs and what they stop doing at the onset of a cardiac arrest. Sounds easy but it does work. But of course get yourself checked out as soon as possible and keep your heart healthy.
