I always held the belief that if the late Jackie Kennedy-Onassis ever had dreams of running for the office of President of the United States she would have won the race by a mile. Fortunately though she never did; she moved on from her life as a Kennedy widow and established herself within another wealthy family of a man as unfaithful and charismatic as her first husband, JFK. She was the Princess Diana of her generation, she went on to lead her own life and did not pursue fame and fortune by way of acting the celebrity or by courting the paparazzi like Diana did.
Fortunately she preferred to leave the President stuff to the men of her generation because if she HAD ever jumped on the presidential bandwagon, capitalising on her fame and her husband’s fame/success the whole thing would have highlighted the gullibility of the American people. There is no luck in winning the office of President of the USA, it is all politics (of course) and masses of PR and even more masses of money. Some charisma helps, just look at the Kennedy guys – they had it in abundance, along with testosterone. Even Bill Clinton with his ‘olde worlde’ manner, his cutesy soft southern accent and natural charm (ok, I’ll admit he had it) rode into Washington DC like a Knight on a horse, a Sir Galahad if you like. And he had a smart wife, rather hard-boiled you have to say, but obviously a smart cookie and one that was NOT going to be an Eleanor Roosevelt type of First Lady.
‘Two for the price of one’ is what Hillary proclaimed when her husband took office and it would be safe to say that many Americans suddenly wondered what they had gotten themselves in for. This woman was stating very clearly that she was going to co-govern with her husband, not bake cookies or wear Dior a la Nancy Reagan. It wasn’t long before people were wondering just who was wearing the pants at the White House!
Now we know. As time wore on we read of President Bill’s indiscretions with nightlclub singers and personal assistants; we watched him on TV lying through his teeth with regards to Monica Lewinsky and we wondered why on earth is Hillary putting up with all of this shit? Why would such a strong, highly educated and intelligent woman tolerate a husband who was so publicly humiliating her? Because, in my opinion, ‘brand Clinton’ was well established and ready to roll for the future. Who would have thought that Hillary would eventually run for Office herself? many people I suppose…
Regardless of the fact that the first Clinton was one too many, that aside, why would the American people want another in the Oval Office? Forget the novelty of her possibly being the first female President of the US, we have had a similar in the UK and one in the Republic of Ireland plus Benazir Bhutto…women are everywhere in politics now. Hillary was placed in charge of establishing health reform for the American people – she bombed. IT bombed. If she cannot get one vitally important issue to American life off the ground and working, how the hell is she going to lead the country?
I suppose she may have to rely on advice from the First Husband, or will that be First Gentleman? I doubt that the American people will be after a ‘two for the price of one’ special a second time…
Will this be a reality?
