US President George Bush recently visited Israel’s Holocaust Memorial; on seeing an aerial photograph of Auschwitz he turned to the secretary of state and remarked that the US should have bombed the camp in order to save the millions who were murdered there.
Appropriate sentiments Mr President, but way way way too late now. And it’s not as if he was speaking with hindsight because it is a well known fact that the US and British Govt’s at that time knew exactly what was going on at not only Auschwitz, but Bergen Belsen, Treblinka, Dachau and other interrment camps in the German occupied parts of Europe. Even France had it’s own couple of interrment camps; one at Rivesaltes in the Pyrenees Orientale region just outside of Perpignan and the other, Natzweiler, in the north east. In fact there were eighteen camps in place around Europe. But Auschwitz was the prime killing centre.
In 1942 British and US reconaissance planes took aerial photographs of the Auschwitz installation. Clearly shown were the camp buildings, the gas chambers, crematoria and chimneys, even the prisoners lined up in the grounds. This was the year when the ‘final solution’ was put into place big time. Why was nothing done at that time? In early 1944 two men, Rudolf Vrba and Alfred Wetzler, the only two people to ever escape Auschwitz, drafted eyewitness reports (the Vrba-Wetzler Report) of what was going on there and that the killings were to be increased to include Hungarians and Czechs. This report made it’s way into the hands of the US State Department, the British Embassy in Bern and the Vatican. Yet still nothing was done.
In fact, it was the Ukranian army that liberated Auschwitz in January 1945.
There is no doubt about these facts; the British and US Govt’s, the Vatican in Rome and the so-called ‘neutral’ Swiss, were all complicit, by their inaction, in assisting the Nazi mass murder of all those innocent people during that time.
Nice to be sorry now Mr Bush…but it is too late. Now whilst we are on the subject of murderous and genocidal regimes Mr President, how about doing something about the likes of Robert Mugabe and his ilk in Africa?…
