More from Killymoon Castle

Please Note: Killymoon Castle is a PRIVATE residence; there is no public admittance to the house or surrounding grounds. The following article refers to European Heritage Weekend in Northern Ireland when the house was open to the public for a strictly limited time.

I received a great little camera for my last birthday and have been using it to death on our trips around Northern Ireland – if one thing is true there are plenty of beautiful places here that make great photo opportunities. Here’s some more from our day at Killymoon Castle in Co Tyrone last Sunday…

To take the above pic we were able to walk across the lovely fields just adjacent to the castle, they are now open to the public to walk around but you have to mind because they have cows grazing in those fields as well. I am still learning how to get the most out of the camera but I usually manage to take a respectable shot.

Killymoon Castle is today a private residence, the house and grounds are not for public admittance.

    • Hello; I was writing specifically about the day in September when Killymoon was open to the public for the European Heritage Open Day weekend, I am very aware that the house is not open to the public at other times and apologise if I gave that impression. I will place a note at the end of the article clarifying that point.
Many members of the public that day were walking through the fields and over the bridge along the footpath, I asked one couple if it was alright to do so and was told that the surrounding grounds were available to the public for rambling an always had been – I assume they were locals and I do not know where they got that idea from if that is not the case. Maybe from the Heritage Weekend literature…? not sure but people that day had the idea that they could roam around during the Open hours.
I have a fair amount of information regarding Killymoon and the Stewart family as my ancestor Isabella Stewart was born there – I have a print of a portrait of Isabella and her husband, John Hamilton of Brownhall Co. Donegal, here. Painted in the late 1700′s.

  2. Was wondering where the name Killymoon actually came from? Is it Gaelic?

    • ‘Killy’ is from the Irish meaning ‘rocky’ – there are place names in Ireland such as Killyleagh, Killybegs, Killyclogher, which are located on either coastal terrain or near rivers.

  3. Thank you Wendy. There are some streets called Killymoon down here in Australia and I’ve been trying to work out where they came from.

    Love the name.
