One major aspect of my new soon-to-come site will the focus on the establishment of the branch of the Hamilton ‘clan’ that arrived in Co Donegal Ireland from Scotland back in the 16th century – mid to late 16th century actually.
This particular branch of the family were not plantationists but landowners – the land being granted to the original John Hamilton via King James in appreciation of the family’s loyalty to the crown. Original settlement was Murvagh.
The family established themselves at this place before relocating to another nearby location where the family seat still stands today. Unfortunately no trace at all remains of the original dwelling, and in fact it’s exact location is not known. But having visited the area I can see that the elements have obviously played a part in that.
I will be focusing on Ballintra Co Donegal (Donegal Town pictured above) from the years of 1690 and onwards. Some of the surnames also associated with this branch of the Hamiltons are: Stewart, Pakenham, Creighton and Blackwood.

Hello
My Hamilton faily come from Co Donegal, at the moment probably Milltown, Raphoe but I have found several William Hamilton’s in 1857 in Glenkeeran, Townparks, Coolaghy glebe, Magherasollus and one again in Raphoe in 1867.
The only names I know are William Hamilton and his daughter Mary Jane Hamilton b.c. 1826/35.
I wondered if you had any Hamilton’s of these names please? Or could lead me somewhere to look. I have found 6 possible marriages for William from 1802 to 1826 and 2 possible baptisms for Mary Jane in 1833 and 1840 but in an ideal world I would like to find the mother of Mary Jane
and a matching wife to William.
I know William was a labourer in 1849.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi
I’m just wondering if you found anything and tried getting through to me, my PC has been playing up and some emails haven’t been going out or coming in, so I thought I’d try again to see if you had any luck with any connections in the Hamilton family of Milltown, Raphoe.
Kind regards
Terry – thanks for getting back in touch -I have been doing the family history thing lately so will have a look for you asap. Hamilton -Milltown – Raphoe. Will get back you!
Hi Terry – I have a David Spence of Milltown, Raphoe. He had a son Alexander who married Mary Jane Hamilton of Milltown and they had 11 children. They married 17th October 1849. Mary Jane’s daughter Elizabeth Spence married in the Church of Raphoe in August 1877.
Mary Jane’s father was William Hamilton who died in 1857. He was the son of the Rev. William Hamilton, Clondavaddock, Co.Donegal.Does this help? I shall keep digging for you!
