I have been following the BBC series Maestroand I have to say that there have been many times where I have literally cringed in my chair.
David Soul’s conducting of the exquisite Barber’s Adagio for Strings is one of them; Jane Asher wiggling her shoulder’s and bum rather than actually conducting is another (oh boy, was she baaaadd). Another celebrity by the name of Goldie who conducted by waving both arms to and fro was simply excruciating…
As an orchestral musician, and as a string player, can I pleeeaase make just one request…?
Could those professional mentors please teach their famous(?) charges the difference between an upbeat and a downbeat…? it is the one thing I have noticed which is missing. And believe me, it makes all the difference.
The Vietnamese Govt have deported him back to England; he refused to board his Heathrow-bound plane at Bangkok and through the usual loopholes associated with the British Home Office - which only ever seem to serve the needs of criminals and terrorists - Mr Glitter has been able to travel on a new passport. He decided he did not wish to return to the UK (too humiliating and he knows what lies in store for him there) and so refused to board the plane.
Now he is en route on another plane to Hong Kong as his human rights dictated he could not be forced to board the plane to the UK. But the Chinese have said they don’t want him either. Don’t blame them!
Let’s cut this nonsence right now. Why not turn the bloody plane right around and divert it to Heathrow…while he is on it and unable to escape?
While on the subject of flying spare a thought and some prayers for those people whose family and friends were among those killed today when a Spanair plane crashed during takeoff at Madrid airport. The plane was filled with tourists all off to holiday in the Canary Islands. Just ordinary, hard working folk taking a break for a few days. Men, women and children.
Name me one person whose childhood was not touched by the world of Walt Disney. Give me a list of your five favourite songs, animated characters or even movies and I would like to bet that at least two of them would feature from a Disney movie. For what it’s worth here are my own special Disney moments - all fifteen of them:
* Phil Collins singing ‘You’ll be in my Heart’ from ‘Tarzan’
* The theme from ‘Pocahontis’
* Donald Duck…just love him
* ‘Beauty and the Beast’…the characterisations. The songs…’Be our guest, be our guest, be our guueeeest’
* ‘The Jungle Book’
* The monkey scene from ‘The Jungle Book’
* The scary ugly witch from ‘Snow White’
* ‘Some day my Prince will come’…the song from ‘Snow White’
* ‘Whistle while you work…’
* One of my favourite songs…’A Whole New World’
* Mickey as the Apprentice in ‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice’ - movie? ‘Fantasia’ of course!
* The beautiful music of ‘Fantasia’ conducted by Leopold Stokowski
* That cute very first-ever film clip of ‘Tug Boat Mickey’ from way back in the 1920’s
* ‘Bambi’…
* When Bambi’s mother got killed…what child didn’t cry - what ADULT didn’t cry…?
I’ll bet these all bring back some great memories and if you’ve got children then you will already have relived them through either video or DVD. Well, guess what…? Mickey and all his Disney friends are staying in touch with the times and are appearing in a range of some very educational DVD’s where your kids can learn to count, memorise their numbers and learn to read as well. In fact the whole family can join in!
With Xmas just almost 12 weeks away you will definitely want to put this new release called Disney Bingo on your shopping list. Why? well, do as I do and go to Amazon.com (which is where I do the bulk of my Xmas shopping) and see for yourself what those people who have already bought this special DVD have to say about it. The reviews are excellent.
And it’s all good believe me. Mickey Mouse has more strings to his guitar than you think!
