56 Up – shows us how growing up used to be.

I have been following the ‘Up’ series since 28 Up – basically because it was never really promoted much on Australian television when I was a kid and the society that those kids came from was much different from the non-classed Australian society I grew up in. But like most, I became hooked on the series because the people in it were just a few years older than myself and we all grew up at a time when childhood was still relatively free of the issues that exist today.

Like young tear-away Tony from the East End, I played in the outdoors and my neighbourhood – no fear of child abductors or paedophiles lurking around the playground back then…even though they did exist. Television was something you might have watched after dinner before bed and dad chose the show and he had the final say. We all left school being able to read, write and add up – no games consoles, no mobile phones, no reality television to become addicted to.

56 Up - Jackie, Sue and Lyn

What I found interesting about the ‘Up’ kids is that they all seemed to follow the path in life that was available to them – those higher up the social ladder fulfilled the expectations of them, those on the lower scale felt their way along their paths because on that level nothing is handed to you…you have to go out and earn it, make it happen with what you have.

It will be interesting to see how happy they have all turned out – if John is less miserable nowadays than he always seemed to be. If the bloke who went to Australia as a young man is finally content with his life having grown up in a children’s home – he always seemed unhappy deep down. And we all want to catch with Neil – he more than anything represents how tenuous our grip on life really is and how much we all are at the mercy of circumstances. I hope it’s all good news :)

Leanne Edelsten: there is no word to describe how vile this woman is.

Okay so I watched Leanne Edelsten (she has never bothered to ditch her ex-doctor-husband’s name despite remarrying…) interviewed on ACA. People have affairs, affairs end – sometimes for the best, sometimes for the worst – if anything can salvage a journey involving deceit it has to be discretion. Leanne Edelsten should look up the word in the dictionary…it appears not long after ‘despicable’.

Clive James: ambushed by Leanne Edelsten

So she had an affair with a married man – Clive James – Australia’s most famous expat broadcaster; a brilliant author and presenter, witty, intelligent and eloquent. A man who has been battling leukaemia, a man who is not very well. As she smirked and flicked at her hair throughout her vile little interview on ACA she looked like a woman proud of spending eight years of her life sleeping with another woman’s husband. But, as she claims, Mrs James ‘is not a woman to feel sorry for’

Like you ex-Mrs Edelsten…? a faded, aging model who has obviously missed the limelight since she divorced her struck-off GP husband, Geoffrey – who took a TV camera crew across the world to England to ambush a bemused but very frail Clive James as he left his small flat to ask…‘do I have anything to worry about?’ – referring to some damaging photos his wife had found of her. No, you have nothing to worry about ex-Mrs Edelsten – I am sure Clive has more pressing things on his mind…like how long he has to live.

You, however madam, have a lot to worry about now; like how to dig your way out of the slurry pit you now exist in. And what the woman who is ‘not a woman you feel sorry for’ is going to do with all those photos of you she found in her husband’s computer – I hope those bleached tresses of yours turn grey overnight with the stress of it all. A Current Affair and Leanne Edelsten…arguably the lowest, most distasteful collaboration in Australian television history. Shame on both of you.

Peter Andre: turn the cameras off – enough is enough.

Having a family member be diagnosed with cancer is devastating for anyone and who among us would want to invite complete strangers from all over the country in to watch the grief and despair that goes along with the ordeal…?

Peter Andre…that’s who.

Not so much the suffering of the brother who has been diagnosed with the disease – but the perpetual sadness that Andre has become so adept at portraying on camera these last three years. His new series has started on ITV2 and central will be Pete portraying a range of emotions from A-Z as his brother fights the disease. On camera of course. We all know how it will go, but here is a brief synopsis for what it’s worth:

See Pete visit the shops with kids.
See Pete at a theme park with kids.
See Pete get a remark in about ‘mummy’ to kids at some point in proceedings.
See Pete cry.
See Pete hug kids.
See Pete say ‘daddy loves you’ to kids.
See Pete receive ‘bad news’ on camera.
See Pete cry…again…on camera.
See Pete make and receive private phone calls bearing bad news…on camera.
See Pete shake head, dab eyes and sigh…on camera.

That’s the series episodes in a nutshell before they’ve even aired!

Also, see ‘devastated’ Pete on several magazine covers with ‘sad face’ speaking ‘exclusively’ about ‘private family matter’ to ‘fans’.

I wish Andrew Andre well in his battle against this insidious disease. I wish his brother would stop turning every moment in his life into publicity fodder. Show some decorum Peter and turn the bloody cameras off for once.
