Projects for 2012…

I don’t make new years resolutions, cannot see the point, but I do believe in reflecting on aspects of life from the previous year and considering ways to improve on them throughout the new year. Last year was an ‘okay’ one for us – the kids did well at school and everyone stayed safe and well and that’s the most important thing to me.

Personally for me this year is going to be quite an academic one; I’m almost through the second module of my university degree and am really enjoying the subject…history of medicine. Things are rolling along well too with my first language module – German – and I have picked the lingo up quite easily and am even able to say things to my German daughter-in-law. I intend to follow this through to advanced level as I love the German language and find it fun to speak. Not sure at the moment what to do with the German with regards to a degree – this is my first language module – but I am sure I will find something to slot it into. I don’t intend to study anything other than German…certainly not French as I never enjoyed speaking that language when we lived there. As it is I am working towards a history degree, this year I will be studying the Enlightenment and Romanticism eras and they will go towards that, but would also like to slot in a music module. Too much choice for sure.

I’ve other avenues of interest that have been closed off for a few years that I wish to open again, but they depend on time-permitting. With the job, the module work and study, plus the family to look after I am running out of time to set aside. Oh yes…I intend to get to the hairdressers this year – if I can remember where I last went. Yep – it’s been that long!

The case of William Stuart highlights the reason why a child’s word cannot always be trusted

In our house right now we feel very deeply for deputy Head teacher, William Stuart, who was suspended from his job at a secondary school in England after an accusation of assault was levelled at him by a female pupil. This girl’s ‘complaint’ resulted in this excellent teacher being arrested, suspended from his job and his named dragged through the mud – all because the school failed to investigate the accusation properly and the parents of the girl ( a trouble maker by all accounts) who supported her ridiculous claim.

We have experienced first hand how inept some school principals are when they refuse to accept the word of the person the accusations are levelled at, and in every way encourage the accuser to go to the police. Mr Stuart’s case should never have gone beyond the walls of the principal’s office – this should have been dealt with internally and should never have resulted in an innocent man being hauled through the court system on the whim of a badly disciplined and dishonest pupil. The truth does come out in the end of course – as it also did in our case – when ‘witnesses’ are shown to be lying through their teeth and magistrates question the appalling failings of school procedures in handling such cases. In our case it was a case of bullying against our son and his dad who was forced to step in and protect him.

But the sad thing that comes out of this is that mud sticks – no matter how false the accusations or that the innocent party was vindicated. What happened to Mr Stuart was a disgrace and, hopefully, provides a note to school principals that a child’s word cannot be taken as law UNTIL every avenue has been investigated.

End of module in sight!

The time has really flown since I began university studies back in February – six assignments under my belt, two more to go and then that’s one module behind me. I’m planning a party for myself to celebrate whatever end of module assessment I get as it has been a journey for me and actually I have done pretty well. Any suggestions as to what I could buy myself for a cheap grad present would be welcome.

My next module begins in October – level 2 – and to make things even more complicated for myself I went and signed up for a language module – beginners German – which will mean I will be running modules 2 and 3 in parallel. I’m looking forward to the German especially as my daughter-in-law is German and obviously any future grandchildren will be German-speaking so having a nanna who can speak to them will be a good thing!

As my son also speaks decent German himself now I will have two guinea-pigs to test my skills on, lol.
