Britain’s Got Talent re-writes the rules as Hollie Steel gets sympathy vote

hollie4While I really congratulate Hollie Steel for successfully completing her song on the second attempt I feel that it was totally wrong, and unfair on all the other contestants, that she was chosen over Greg Pritchard to go through to the final tomorrow night. Had any other performer foundered during their act they would have been buzzed without hesitation.

The judges re-wrote the rule book of any talent contest – you should be judged on your performance on a professional basis. Greg Pritchard got his performance right the first time – Hollie did well on her second attempt in a squeaky-voiced  way,  but it was not a showstopping performance and it should not have qualified her to win over another contestant who got it right the first time. Let’s say to hell with it and admit Greg Pritchard to the final tomorrow night anyway!

So, if someone stuffs up tomorrow night do they also get a second chance…?

Like I said, well done to Hollie – but the result tonight is not a fair one by a long shot.

  1. I felt really sorry for her, however, have to say, what a pushy mother!
    Child stars notoriously fail.
Talented girl, but Mum, PLEASE let her grow up normally,
She will cringe at that when she views it again at 19

    • Of course you feel sorry for these kids – such a show, and a live one at that – is tremendously daunting even for a professional performer!
Once that mother got up on stage as if the judges were going to say ‘no’…
Greg Pritchard should be admitted to the final as well – he gave the better performance by far…and he did not require a second chance.
This will not bode well for the show over the next 24 hours…

  2. Tonight was a joke; no one should go through on a sympathy vote.
That was very wrong and unfair of the other contestants!

    • Totally wrong and very unfair in my experience! they could have indulged her by letting her come on at the very end but it should not have qualified her to win. The judges did not make a professional decision at all here – I say let Greg Pritchard go into the final as well!

  3. I live in Canada (BGT not available here) and have avidly been catching up on all the shows via YouTube. Tonight is the first time that I’ve been left with a sour taste in my mouth. The decision that was made to let Hollie sing again, was totally unfair to all the other contestants, particularly the other younger ones that have performed through the week. I’m sure Nathalie Okri, Callum Francis and Shaheen Jafargholi were all incredibly nervous too however they carried on. There was something so not right about Hollie’s first little breakdown, something that seemed incredibly staged. As others have posted on other sites, where were the tears? Was this child manipulated to do this? Or is it just as it appeared on tv and totally innocent?

I wish little Hollie well, however I really feel that Greg Pritchard (a very unique and talented singer) was robbed and he too should be given the chance to be in the finals.

    • Greg should be allowed to go into the final just as Hollie was allowed a second go. This is not an amateur contest as money is being made from this show and there is a cash prize at stake. She should have been judged on her merit – her FIRST performance – just like all the others were.

This is unfair, breaks all the rules and sends a very strange message to all young performers and would be performers..throw a wobbler and you will get another chance, Beautiful voice. Total disrespect from the judges for all other nervous contestants…if you cry and stamp your foot you will be fine.. this was painful to watch, real “car crash” TV.

    • Oh yes,did you see the foot stamping…? she and Susan Boyle are becoming a great endorsement for the show – it should be retitled ‘Britain’s Got Problems’…!

I thought her voice was thin and squeaky this time round, the song was pitched too high for her.

  5. Guys,do you think a 10year old girl with such a heart will be saying to herself Those with ”fake tears/scripted/sympathy vote” are pure idiots of life.Shes 10. Life is full of unfairness.Yet,this girl DESERVES another chance. Childen who do errors are more acceptable than an adult. Shes going to prove everyone shes capable of doing it. HOLLIE FOR THE WIN

    • Yes, and a good lesson for all those others who put in the hard work and did not need to stamp their feet in order to get another chance. Life IS full of unfairness and this should have been lesson number one for Hollie – this show has lost it’s credibility. There should be one rule for all – not just for cute 10 year old girls.

  6. Guys,do you think a 10year old girl with such a heart will be saying to herself :Ok, i am going to screw my singing, i am going to try to cry, make everyone feel sympathy for me, to make me go to the finals. Those with ”fake tears/scripted/sympathy vote” are pure idiots of life.Shes 10. Life is full of unfairness.Yet,this girl DESERVES another chance. Childen who do errors are more acceptable than an adult. Shes going to prove everyone shes capable of doing it. HOLLIE FOR THE WIN

  7. She was amazing on her second time however it wasnt fair for Greg, besides children younger than her, like Good Evans, deal much better with pressure than her. And as everyone is saying, what is gonna happen during the final??? will she crying over and over again to get public vote??? If Simon Cowell thinks that she really got talent than why not give her support instead of second chance???

    • I don’t think she was ‘amazing’ at all – she completed the song but she sang out of tune in many places and was very squeaky. She just stood there! Greg actually PERFORMED!
And who on earth ever won a talent show by singing bloody Edelweiss – a simple, banal tune at best – besides the Von Trapp family???

  8. really unfair that she got to redo her performance. greg was totally robbed he should have been going to the finals instead this little cheat gets to go. Sure I felt bad for the little girl but its just like the other days when the judges were picking the 2nd person to go into the finals from every semi final show. there were tough decisions to be made and they broke the hearts of the young ones so what makes this little girl different that she gets a second chance?

  9. Like all the others have said, it was unfair to let hollie through just because she was ‘brave’. What? Loosing your nerve is

  10. understandable in such a big show, especially for someone so young but the judges shouldn’t hark on about being brave and letting her go through purely on that. Greg has an amazing talent…he was definitely robbed ! Disgraceful.

  11. complete and utter unfair advantage, gregg pritchard should have gone through to final, what did amanda say before you only have two minutes! i was a regular viewer but what tactics hollies steele did last night is a joke , i can’t be bothered to watch the show now if rules are being bended to suit.

    • Completely agreed; I would like to know at what stage Hollie had entitlement…there were others who would have liked a second shot as well.

  12. Where were the tears that are being mentioned ?????? She’s probably a better actress than singer and she reminded me of Violet Elizabeth Bott from the Just William book who boasted “I can scream and scream and scream ’till I’m sick”.

Apart from that the decisin to let her repeat her performance is totally unfair on every contestant that has entered this ‘show’.

    • Actually Steve you make a good point; that was a very ‘dry’ tantrum now that I recall. There were no real tears and that has been pointed out in another news publication.

      To complain email: viewerservices@itv.com

or add the the bombardment on the ITV BGT boards; a lot of people are pretty pissed about it!

  13. I hated the way that Amanda Holden could turn to Greg Pritchard and say that Hollie actually gave the better performance of the two of them. A total joke! There were other more talented performers – what about Callum Francis and Natalie Okri?

    • That was incredible – I was happy to see the kid get a second shot but never assumed the judges would take it into account!
She was off key and too squeaky – and she just stood there. It was a ‘no performance’ performance.

  14. Hannah Pickup

this is so unfair, ok so she’s 10, but like that matters, if this happens to anyone else they would be buzzed, sympathy votes are just unfair, and this is what this is. Greg was amazing, i think that they should announce at the start of the final ‘Due to last nights drama, we have added in a 11th finalist, greg’ -that is what should happen. This is not gregs fault, and if was based on hollies first proformeance, (how it should be) Greg would be in the final.

  15. ‘Hey guys can i have a second go because i totally muffed up my first performance. Please!’
Buzz,Buzz and Buzz is the kind of response which i will get from the judges.
But Hollie Steel gets all the ENCOURAGEMENT from the judges and they let her have another go.She might as well as cry all day long with no tears coming until she thinks that she got her performance just perfect while the other contestants has to get theirs right the first time because i never saw Amanda standing up to give other contestants any hugs while they were nervous. For example, when they first saw Susan Boyle, everyone was laughing and Susan had to get her performance right the first time to show the nation what she could do!

But anyway, im glad the little cute girl who is a total cheater didnt win. Because Diversity deserved to win and Diversity are actually the people who needed the change in their lives especially.
    So congratulations to Diversity!!!

  16. Hollie’s a beautiful singer – so professsional – and such a pretty little girl, too! My heart went out to her when she broke down in tears mid-way through her first attempt at the song Edelweiss (from The Sound of Music); she had so set her heart on singing in front of
a live audience. OK, so her nerves got the better of her, so what? She was only 10 at the
time (she’s 11 now), she was on that stage all by herself in front of around 15,000,000 people! But…she composed herself sufficiently to make an amazing comeback and perform her
song again, this time perfectly. How brave is that??? I take my hat off to young Hollie for showing such courage, now that is brilliant! Hollie went through to the final – but what a shame she wasn’t the BGT 2009 winner! Josh, her elder brother, who is 15, also auditioned for BGT but his act fell flat, but far from being jealous, he’s backed his lovely little sister every step of the way! I’d like to wish Hollie all the very best for the future – she’ll go far with that beautiful voice of hers.

    • In any other professional talent show – where cash is a major prize – she would not have gotten a second go at performing. Nerves are part and parcel of performing and if one cannot get it together the first time then one needs to learn to manage their stage fright. They bent the rules for one contestant and this was unfair, unprofessional and biased. So she was ‘cute’…she deserved no special treatment and I am glad she did not win. She needs to pay her dues before she qualifies for stardom – BGT may well turn out to be her main/only claim to fame.

  17. Hollie is 10 years old…she will have to learn at some point that life isnt fair…she can also go for it again next year as I believe others have. If she has the voice she will still have it next year. By then she could have learnt how to handle the stress of performance better which which bode well for her long term career which is obviously in singing. Greg probably invested a lot more for his performance and may not be able to attempt this again. IF they judged Hollie on her partial performance and can honestly say that got her through all well and good but favouritism shouldnt be so blatant.

    • It did not get her very far – she seems to have sunk into obscurity. There are countless children with talent like hers who conduct themselves in a much more professional manner. Unfortunately others within the industry would have seen that foot-stamping on stage, along with that pushy mother of hers, and vowed not to have anything to do with them. It came across very badly and i’m afraid Hollie brought it on herself. If you are going to place yourself in a situation where you are going to be judged on a PROFESSIONAL basis then it is up to you to conduct yourself in such a way. I have seen children in the industry younger than Hollie who run rings around her for professionalism. Her teacher – if she has one – let her down in that respect.
