Benazir Bhutto

Whilst I was away this past week in Valencia I saw on TV the horrible news about the assassination of former PM of Pakistan Benazir Bhutto. The first thing that came to mind was ‘ so they finally got her’.  In my opinion her murder was never a matter of ‘if’ but ‘when’.

Back in October when she arrived in Pakistan after years of exile I wrote about the hope she brought to the people of that country. I also wrote about the problems that would follow and about the dangers that she obviously would face. Pakistan is, right now, in the hands of people who do not want democracy in that country. Pakistan is in the hands of people, men, who would never stand for it’s people being led to freedom by, of all things, a woman!

But a woman Benazir was. And a brave and far thinking one at that. What a terrible shame that in this world, on this planet of ours in the 21st century, there are men who still object to women being acknowledged as human beings. And intelligent human beings at that.  Benazir Bhutto stood for a Pakistan that would take it’s place and stand beside all the major world powers in both trade and politics; for democracy for it’s people, for freedom. For peace.

How terrifying that such objectives have so many enemies.

  2. Thankyou for your comments. It is always sad that those leaders who fight for peace and democracy in this world so often meet a violent death. I hope we will see her ideals become reality and bring a stable and prosperous future for the people of Pakistan.
