The images of the boat carrying yet more asylum seekers aiming for Australian shores as it broke up among enormous waves off Christmas Island today are both horrifying and infuriating. Up to 50 people, including children and babies, are known to have drowned so far and the number of dead could climb even higher as rescuers sift through wreckage debris for bodies. Locals who woke to the screams of the victims as the tragedy occurred at daybreak told of seeing the boat crash onto the cliffs in huge waves and disintegrate; one eyewitness told of people forming a human chain and throwing life jackets to those in the water and seeing the men pushing women and children away from the life jackets, taking them for themselves.
The human cargo is said to have travelled from Iraq and Iran once again having handed over cash to the vile Indonesian people-smugglers in return for a creaky boat and no assurance of making it to Australia. Over 130 refugee boats have been intercepted on their way to Australian waters this year, all carrying people hoping to claim asylum in Australia from countries such as those above as well as Afghanistan and Sri Lanka. The Australian Government processes all those who end up at the Christmas Island detention centre – some are granted asylum, many are not – but this centre is seriously overcrowded and tougher measures are needed to see that the boats stop coming altogether. Indonesia as a nation is really no friend of Australia’s, the Indonesian Govt don’t give a damn about these people or the evil trade that flourishes within Indonesia that encourages this people smuggling business.
Australian Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, will romp home in the next election if she makes a priority out of the problem of asylum seekers coming to Australia in this way but she will continue to push this issue under the carpet – an issue that was under control when John Howard was Prime Minister – 5 boats a year back then as opposed to 130 a year now…? Gillard and the Labor Party have failed to address this problem and in fact have even encouraged the activities of the evil people smugglers. There’s no more room for them in the detention centres, they are dying in the attempt to come here and our Pacific neighbours are not interested in assisting Australia in this matter. Julia Gillard has these people’s deaths on her Party’s hands – what is she going to do now…?

I have been reading some rubbish about these asylum seekers today but learning that the men fought the women and children for those life jackets just proves even more to me that these people must be pulled out of the water, dried off and then sent straight back to where they came from. Too much is made about their courage and determination to get a better life when in fact these people, especially the men, are as ruthless as the bastards who smuggle them onto these boats. They are out for getting whatever they can for themselves and will walk over women and children to get it, as we have seen here in this case. Dont feel sorry for them I don’t except for those poor kids whose lives were not worth much according to the adults around them. Good on the Aussies for attempting such a rescue but I hope those men who caused women and children to drown through their selfishness are weeded out and given no preferential treatment at all. Make sure you send them all back.
A little harsh there ashley but I do agree with your point about these asylum seekers, or to be more correct ‘illegal immigrants’. They are not heroes or people to admire because many will kill to get onto one of those boats and stay on one. They should claim asylum in one of their neighbouring asian or european countries but I feel they like what they’ve seen in the brochures.
