It’s time to do something about that old boiler…

oldboilerI would like to bet that it has been quite a while since you took a look at your domestic boiler. I suppose it lives out in the garage – like most of them do – and I would not be a bit surprised if it looked something along the lines of that particular boiler pictured here. The fact is we really pay the old thing very little attention at all and we only notice it exists when something goes wrong…and when your boiler goes wrong it means inconvenience and money. Right now we have decided that ours has reached the end of the road and, yes, it does resemble that one there because it was installed well over 25 years ago and every time I see it when I go out the back it gives me the creeps. Judging by the way the hot water has become unreliable in recent months I’d say it is time to take a look at the Boiler Scrappage Scheme which I have only just learned about.

Actually we do need to replace ours and I like the idea of this scheme which is just like the one that encouraged people to trade in their old cars. Old cars and boilers – two things that leave the biggest carbon footprints these days and we are all aware of being environmentally responsible in this day and age. Basically it works quite simply; you apply for a voucher and this will give you £400 off the cost of a new A-Rated boiler when you scrap your old G-Rated boiler. We really need to get behind this scheme, apart from the fact that you can save hundreds of pounds, the new Green Boilers are much kinder to the atmosphere by being 90% more efficient and  use far less fuel. This will cut CO2 emissions drastically and our children’s children will be the one’s who will thank us for this. So what kind of boiler do I need to have to qualify…? here’s some examples and they can be gas or oil…

* AFOS Solo

* AGA RAYBURN Gcb model

* ALADDIN INDUSTRIES Brick Central

* BARLO Blenheim…

There is quite an extensive list so most should qualify. Right now this scheme is open to all English postcode addresses regardless of whether you own or rent privately – it only takes ten days from date of application to when you get your voucher.

How long should Peter Sutcliffe remain in prison…? for as long as his victims remain dead would be a good measure.

Because of sadistic creature Peter Sutcliffe thirteen women are not here today to tell the story of how he made their final moments of life on earth terrifying in a way that none of us could ever imagine, no matter how hard we tried we could never be able to grasp the sheer horror of what they endured and how the very last thing they ever saw were the eyes of complete evil. This man – if one could call him that – is one prisoner who society was assured would never see the light of day again, surely if ‘life’ could ever mean ‘life’ this was one case where it would apply…?

Enter the Legal Aid Board who, in 2006, awarded Sutcliffe £50,000 to enable him to launch a bid for freedom on the premise that he was no longer dangerous. No longer dangerous. In whose eyes is this person ‘no longer dangerous’ …? having spent 29 years in a psychiatric institution, where women have been pretty thin on the ground in terms of company and social interaction, just how do authorities expect this person to step back into society after he has murdered 13 women, the youngest just sixteen years old? we have enough paranoid schizophrenics wandering the streets as it is – only last month a young pregnant woman was knifed to death by a mentally ill man as she walked to work one morning. A young girl was stabbed to within an inch of her life in the aisle of a Tesco store before Xmas by a man who had not bothered to keep taking his medication for schizophrenia – and now they want to consider releasing this condition’s worst possible advertisement…?

Whether you believe it was ‘voices’ that told this monster to slaughter those poor women is up to yourself – I do not and I doubt any other straight thinking person would either – but this is one individual who must never be accorded the very rights and privileges he took away from his victims. He has no right to a new life, he has no right to freedom, and if you want to set a figure as to just how long is fair for him to remain incarcerated then I say use the same sentence that he imposed on his victims and their families…LIFE. For as long as his victims remain dead so should he remain behind bars.

Happy birthday baby Peter.

This is how you looked when you came into this world – brand new, so vulnerable, so in need of protection and love. A tiny bundle of freshly minted humanity with so much promise and potential, so deserving of nothing but the very, very best. The world very definitely owed you everything that it could give you – and who would not want to…?

Today you would be four years old and reaching that very important milestone of becoming a little boy, no longer being a toddler. You would be out of nappies now and learning how to feed yourself, you will have learned songs at nursery school and how to paint and draw pictures to stick up on the fridge for everyone to see. You know all about Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny, the tooth fairy has not yet been to see you but you know you will get a pound when she does.

Life seems pretty good when you are four years old and with so many birthdays yet to come it does not seem as though it can get any better. Life does get better little Peter, all children deserve it for life to get as good as it can get and you certainly can expect so many wonderful things to happen for you. Soon it will be time to go to school where life will open up so many more of it’s secrets and mysteries – learning to read and to write, seeing how the word ‘Peter’ looks when you first write it in your childlike scrawl. Making friends, lots of friends, will happen easily and the little girls will go crazy for your silky blonde hair and cornflower-blue eyes.

Today you would be four years into your journey through life and still just setting out on that magical trip called ‘childhood’, you have such a long way to go and at times that road will be bumpy but you will be lucky because there will be plenty of gentle hands to catch you when you fall and guide you back along your way. Today it is the 1st March 2010 and you should be turning four years old, but you are not and we know that only too well, instead you will be forever that beautiful 17 month old baby boy who left us too soon and never got to know just how wonderful life could have been. I like to think that the above words describe your life, had you lived, as it would have been – full of happiness, kindness and love…everyone’s favourite little boy. If only…

But today you are four years old and you will remain our very special little boy forever, every child deserves a birthday and today we celebrate yours as it should have been.

Happy 4th Birthday Peter :)
