Is this obese passenger a safety hazard on the plane…?

Just imagine that you are stuck sitting in a window seat on this aircraft and for some reason the announcement is made for people to evacuate – and you are seated next to this man…

obeseflyerHe cannot fit into his seat let alone the aisle and you have to wait behind him before you can make your escape. Before you accuse me of ‘fattism’ just imagine the implications of someone so large and cumbersome being caught in a similar situation. This picture was taken by an air stewardess recently on an American Airlines flight because she could not believe what she was seeing. How did they get the service trolley up the aisle for drinks…? and just how would you get past someone like this in an emergency…?

How did he fit in the loo…? it is not known whether he was asked to leave the aircraft but one question remains unanswered – Where’s the armrest….?

Giving the gift of time for Xmas

seikowatchI have been trying to think of what to buy for two of my sons who happen to live in different places around the world from me; one son lives in Germany while the other lives in Australia – three of the younger one’s live with me but they are relatively easy to buy for seeing as they have been nagging since August and I have a fairly good idea of what they want by now.

I thought a few years back, as they each turned 18, that I would get them heirloom-type gifts over the following years so that they would have nice pieces to hand on down to their own children in time. Patrick got a lovely fob watch from me for his 18th and treasures it – I am thinking along the same lines for William although more in terms of a stylish watch. I was always generous with my time with them when they were little boys and even though they are far away from me now I think giving the gift of time can still be done but in other ways – what better than a nice watch then…? William in Australia actually needs a good watch so he is the one I have in mind so I spent some time looking at these Seiko Kinetic watches which look as thought they would last a lifetime.

Everyone should be familiar with the Seiko brand and it’s reliability as well as their affordability…in my case those things matter at this time of year. If you are in my situation and are shopping online then you can find a great range of these watches at BlueDial.com and for US customers particularly you get free shipping to continental USA within two days of purchase and just in time for Xmas. You also get the manufacturers three year warranty which is two years longer than other manufacturers offer on their pieces, even though Seiko watches last a lifetime this gives peace of mind and BlueDial also offer their own consumer protection where required. As BlueDial offer watches from a range of manufacturers they can be very competitive price-wise and now is the best time of all to take advantage of this aspect.

School Prizegiving Day and when your kid dosen’t get one…again.

falling asleepI wonder how many of you parents out there have sat through this special event in the school calendar and watched as your kid gets sweet nothing (again…) and the usual kids win everything…

I am putting my hand up because with three older kids who have been through school, or are just coming to the end of high school, I have  been there and have several t-shirts. My second son once won a maths award when he was 15 but as far as my kids being among the elite that was that. I have been attending these events since 1991, every year to be exact, and you could always tell by looking around the audience which parents agreed with me. The expressions of surprise, the resigned expectation as the same kid walks up to the podium for the forth time to win the award for Best Teachers Pet for the 3rd year running – and then walks back to hand mum and dad another trophy to set down by their crowded feet. And it is not long before the expressions on various faces changed from being bored to deeply aggrieved…and then to downright pissed. Does it really matter that ten-times-awarded Amy is the daughter of the Head Teacher…? nah, politics surely plays no part in these events…

I attended the prize-giving day at my sons school yesterday and sat for two hours watching other people’s kids collect trophies and certificates for every category under the sun…how is it that your kid never seems to qualify for anything! three kids basically stayed at the edge of the stage during the name reading as they bagged so many among themselves. Actually on this occasion I wasn’t too worried as my son was merely singing with his group in one of the interim items and was not on the awards list anyway so the pressure was off for once – it was making it to the end of the guest presenters 20 minute speech on the schools committment to being green that almost made me lose the will to live…
