When, as a parent, you know you did the right thing

I have just waved off my son Patrick and his beautiful girlfriend, Esther, at the train station after they spent four weeks with us here in France. And boy am I missing them right now…

But I am so happy and for many reasons. Happy that my son, my firstborn, has found a beautiful girl who he loves so much and who adores him in return. Happy that I raised a son who has grown up to be a kind, caring and so affectionate young man. Happy that he is so kind and considerate towards her and that he looks after her so well. They are off to live in Germany and the big adventure in life is really starting now for my son; and it seems only a short time since I waved him off at another place – the school gate on his first day at school. I cried then too…

You often wonder as a parent, as your children are growing up, whether you are doing the right thing by them but when I see Patrick being so tender and loving with Esther I know I have done something right. I always told my sons “be nice to the girls and always be kind to your wife” and somewhere along the way it sunk in.

Esther is now benefiting from that.

Getting William sorted

My poor chook of a son has been through the ringer lately; first he finds he has an eye condition called ‘keratacoma’ (I call it ‘kerry katona’ though) and needs an operation then that dreaded foe of his – acne – made an unwelcome return.

It is the stress though he has been through. The poor kid needs laser eye surgery and I cannot be there with him for it and now he has to take Acnepril all over again when we all thought he was over that two years ago.

My Mum has promised to be with him at the hospital when he goes in and will look after him when he is discharged but I would much rather it was me doing it. I know he is 22 but he is still my baby and what else are Mums for???

Frustrating French mobile broadband!

As we are only here for a short space of time we did not bother with the expense of taking out an internet contract – here in our part of france you have to sign up for a minimum 12 months and as we are only here for two at the most what is the point of that?

But we needed internet access and so organised a mobile broadband connection with Bouyges -total rubbish it is too, which is why this site is getting a litle neglected of late. The speed is so slow that many sites simply do not load – this one included. When we need to do our work we tend to race up to McDonalds and use the free wifi.

One thing we have noticed though is the drop in numbers of tourists in the region; many hotels that are normally bunged this time of year have plenty of rooms and we have been told that you can easily walk into most hotels by the beach and get a room at a minutes notice. Also the local cafes are not as busy as they once were at midday; one local cafe owner must be regretting his previous years of poor attitude towards the english speaking tourists as his tables are largely empty these days and those same english speaking tourists are giving him a wide berth…word of mouth you see and a little bit of karma.
