Travesty of justice for Scotland’s ‘Baby P’ – Brandon Muir

brandonmuir1For those of us counting the days until the sentencing of the three killers of baby Peter, the worrying aspect is just how severe will be their punishment?

We do have some idea though that they will be in for ‘substantial sentences’ courtesy of the words of the presiding magistrate Stephen Kramer QC at the end of the recent trial. I happen to hold some real hope from that statement due to the fact that I have it on good authority that Judge Kramer is a magistrate not to be messed around with…

While it appears that little Peter’s suffering and death will earn his abusers an appropriate sentence in prison, such is not the case for a little two year old boy who suffered in very much the same way – Brandon Muir.

brandonmuirmotherBrandon had the bad luck of being born to a heroin addicted prostitute, Heather Boyd, and spent his very brief 24 months on this earth paying the consequences for a mistake made by a ‘god’ who seems to reserve this unique kind of suffering for innocent, defenceless babies.

If that offends anyone reading this then please – how else do you explain it then…?

But when fellow addict Robert Cunningham took up residence in Heather Boyd’s squalid life little Brandon’s days became horrifically numbered. Despite desperate numerous pleas from Brandon’s grandmother, auntie and biological father, social services once again ignored warnings and fears and saw fit to leave Brandon to be the punching bag of two drug addicts.

As with baby Peter, Brandon was deemed better off living/existing in a filthy squat of a flat with a drug addicted, unloving mother and her sadistic, spiteful boyfriend. Both children never had a chance; no matter how many concerned relatives they had, nobody thought to just walk in and remove either child from their environment and worry about the consequences later…

cunninghamBrandon was eventually killed by Cunninghams’ monstrous blow to his abdomen – so violent that his intestine was split – and while the baby was agonisingly vomiting bile he was dragged by his mother to a junkie squat nearby where she proceeded to get stoned. Brandon wandered from room to room in distress - vomiting – before dying in agony on the floor next to a filthy toilet.

For killing this child Robert Cunningham received a pathetic ten year jail sentence; it was one glimmer of hope for Brandon’s family that prosecutors would appeal this paltry punishment but Prosecutors have decided NOT to appeal the sentence.

A Crown Office Spokesman said “The sentence imposed was within the range available to the judge.”…it makes you wonder just what you have to do to get a life sentence in Scotland…

And Heather Boyd?…you will be heartened to know that she is receiving the treatment she so deserves. Escaping a prison sentence, she is now being hounded out of every ‘safe house’ in every town authorities find for her. Vigiliante mobs discover her whereabouts and the hate groups then move in. I am not advocating meting out punishment of the redneck variety – but if I found out this female was living next door to me…

And the final insult to all of this; Cunningham’s lawyers are to appeal his sentence. Justice? you go figure…

It’s official: Parents are NOT perfect!

isabellastewarthamiltonSo tell us something we don’t already know eh? those of us who already are parents that is…

That little picture at left; that is actually a portrait of – believe it or not – my 6th great-grandmother (Isabella Stewart-Hamilton) with some of her grandchildren way back in  the late 18th century. Back then children were reared very differently to today and mothers had a much harder time of things without all todays mod cons. Being a parent in those old days had the same challenges that we parents of today grapple with…

Mum’s had basically the same problems back then as we do now and in some ways probably had more support by way of extended family being close by and lots of advice from helpful female relatives. Two things that have changed though are ideas and approaches but parents can still get the help and support they need even if they have no family around them to help out.

In this day and age we have the internet of course and sites like Parents Connect where parents do exactly that; Mums and Dads can ask questions regarding any topic and you can be assured someone will have an answer or solution to the problem – most people have walked in your shoes at some stage and thats comforting to know.

Old Isabella there had 13 children – people would say back then they had them the hard way…well, times have certainly not changed. If someone ever finds an easy way to have and raise kids then let us all in on the secret!

The Cootamundra Wattle

Have you a particular song that represents a special time in your life?

I have several but this song happens to mean something very special to me – I love it because the lyrics are so poignant and beautiful. John Williamson is a great Australian singer/songwriter and performs this song in such a simple but so very touching way.  This – as always – is for my son William…
