Baby Peter: Justice at long last and the legacy a little boy left behind

babyp3I know for a fact that people right around the world will be breathing huge sighs of relief at the news that has come out of the Central Criminal Court this evening.

For a start that beautiful little blonde boy whose blue eyes have melted the hearts of everyone who read of his fate has finally been afforded his identity in the media – Peter. Now I know that we all know his mother’s full name but just for the month of May I cannot refer to it here and is the reason why every clue relating to Baby Peter (and ‘her’ and ‘them’)  had to completely disappear from this site over a week ago. I will go into more detail about this in my next article…

But Peter now has his name restored in public at least.

Today the result of nearly two years of painstaking hard work by the Metropolitan Police, solicitors and witnesses alike, ‘the mother’ has been informed that she and ‘her boyfriend’ will be receiving “very substantial prison sentences” on May 21 & May 22.

‘The Boyfriend’ is has been found guilty and is facing a life sentence for the rape and systematic abuse of Peter’s two year old sister over a period of time. He will be sentenced for the abuse of the little girl as well as ‘allowing/causing’ the death of Peter. At the same time ‘the mother’ and lodger, Jason Owen, will be receiving their sentences.

This conviction of rape on a child was significant – it means that the presiding magistrate – Stephen Kramer QC – will be able to impose a life sentence on ‘the boyfriend’ given his high level of threat and danger to the community. Peter’s ‘mother’ however was found not guilty of cruelty to the girl and is to be sentenced for her role in Peter’s death later in May.

The little girl, Peter’s sister, is a child in a million. Aged just two at the time of the abuse and her brother’s death, she is now slightly older and amazed courtroom staff at her courage, tenacity and credibility in giving her evidence via video link. The news of her abuse came out relatively late in proceedings and it is due to the courage of this little girl that ‘the boyfriend’ will received the harsh sentence he deserves. She is receiving the ongoing help and support she needs and it is hoped she will find ways to adjust and cope in her life ahead.

And of the little blue-eyed boy with hair like silken gold; his soul just may rest a little more peacefully tonight now that those who tormented him to death are seeing their bleak and deserved futures clearly and unavoidable in front of them. His big sister may not have been able to save him from what ultimately happened to him in August 2007, but in the end she proved that the most unlikely, the most silent and the most innocent victims can, in the end, speak the loudest.

Peter was the second chance that social services managed to get after Victoria Climbie; there are no third chances anymore.

Update:

Mother of baby Peter, Tracey Connolly, and Stephen Barker will be sentenced for their crimes 21/22nd May, Central Criminal Court.

The Gurkha’s can stay – now let’s have Joanna Lumley for PM!

In one of the best decisions ever taken by members of the House of Commons, the MP’s completely over-ruled Prime Minister Gordon Brown and voted to not accept the ridiculous and highly discriminatory new rules which would see hundreds of retired Gurkhas and their families being refused the privilege of settling in the United Kingdom.

A more loyal servant of the Crown of England than the Gurkha soldier does not exist. The Gurkha’s have served the Crown with nothing short of distinction since 1817 – they have died fighting for the British monarch, they have been injured and served the British Army numbering many who were decorated with VC’s, DSO’s and MC’s.

gurkhaslumleyAnd the British Govt has systematically refused them permission to settle in the UK as British subjects – until now. These men were good enough to serve and die for the Crown so they are good enough to live here, it is the very least the Govt can do for these unique and wonderful people.

Actress Joanna Lumley, herself the daughter of a Ghurka regiment officer, has championed the Gurkha’s cause since the unfairness of the policy came to light and has steadfastly fought for the rights of these men and their families. It is truly one of the best battles ever won on British soil – and the most unneccessary one at that.

The Gurkha is a legend; a ferocious, fearless enemy – a loyal, courageous and resilient friend. Their indispensible contribution to service in the British Armed Forces continues today; the British Crown owes them far more than it could ever repay them.

Laura Fletcher: cold eyes of a killer

laurafletcherThese topics all come under the Justice for Baby P category now as child abuse and child murder is now so endemic in the United Kingdom that never a week goes by without at least one more incident coming to light.

If you have ever wondered what goes on in the mind and behind the eyes of a mother who cold bloodedly kills her own child then take a look at this photograph of 22 year old Laura Fletcher as she is driven away from court yesterday. She is formally charged with murdering her four year old daughter Chloe.

While shocked and devastated neighbours and staff at little Chloe’s pre-school pay tribute and try to come to terms with what has happened police revealed that Chloe was drowned in a bathtub. Her mother then dried her body, dressed her then laid her out on her bed before phoning police.

With those same ice cold eyes that woman watched her terrified little girl struggle for life – that unemotional blank canvas for a face was the very last thing poor little Chloe saw.

There is something inherently evil in those eyes.
