As the life of one of the great beauties of the 20th century comes to a close we can prepare ourselves for the obituaries and tributes that will follow in many forms over the coming months. Farrah Fawcett is said to be close to death as her cancer takes it’s final hold.
While few will dispute her status as an icon of the typical ‘American Girl’ type of beauty; her blue eyes, the wide smile and that glorious flowing mane wavy blonde hair that had just about every woman and girl green with envy in the 1970′s.
Her acting talents will be lauded – many will agree that she was a capable dramatic actress and at the same time some will not. She did more for red bikinis than Pamela Anderson ever did and still holds the honour of being the most successful pinup of all time.
But as Farrah lingers there is the issue of the one achievement in life she should have been the most proudest of – her son Redmond – her only child and the product of her long term relationship with Ryan O’Neal.
Redmond has been told that he must remain in prison on drugs charges – not his first time by any means – leaving him unable to spend what could be his mothers last moments with her. It is so sad to see that young man standing there behind those bars; with his looks, his genes, his opportunities and first class Hollywood connections he could have been a major star himself.
Instead those connections and influences led him down a road into a life of crime and drug addiction. He is only 23, the same age as my eldest son – I remember reading in the newspaper when he was born…not long after my own son in fact.
Just having parents blessed with good looks and talent does not ensure life will smile upon you; Farrah has had her own addictions, O’Neal has a well publicised battle with illness, drugs, drink and assault charges to his name. And their only child together has inherited these too, their only legacy to him it seems.
When Farrah finally passes away she will be remembered glowingly for many things – but I doubt her skills as a parent will earn her the same praise.

Britain certainly does have talent.
It cost the taxpayer £200,000 to fund the birth of those babies; a 68-strong team had to combine to deliver this fat cow of her calves courtesy of the NHS. And now she intends to repay society by producing children who almost certainly will grow up obese and benefit-scrounging and will also have all the textbook behavioural problems and health issues that the children of such people have throughout childhood. Not only does she not care, she actually seems proud of herself for taking such risks with her children’s health and futures.
