Leader of the Tory Party, David Cameron, has revealed his plans for getting welfare recipients off their bums and into the workforce. Any plan to achieve this has to be greeted with applause but there will always be some scepticism.
I would like to see him start with the single mums. Now to be fair – not all single mums are in the same category as Karen Matthews and her ilk. Many have found themselves single though circumstance and as a result gotten caught in a vicious cycle; can’t afford childcare so can’t afford to go to work.
But most do want to work – that’s a fact. I would like to see an initiative similar to that which has worked well in Australia whereby those people who have an idea for a small business can apply for a grant to help them get their business off the ground.
Now this can apply to anything reasonable; a small business franchise, a home-based business, internet-based business – there are options out there for women on their own with children – and ideas. All they need is a helping hand to start them on their way.
I am sure there is an untapped source in the community which is only hindered by lack of finance; come on David – give ‘em a go and see how it works!
Society will only benefit.
