Very little I would say. I used to be the type of kid who could not watch a creepy movie before bed and then go straight to sleep. I’d toss and turn and listen for every sound in the night which told me a monster was coming to get me too. My dad would come in eventually and sit with me until I went to sleep – ’save me from the monster’. It was all in my mind of course but such a thing was not for little Baby Peter.
17 month old Peter had a real monster living in his house – three of them in fact – and one of them was his own mother.
But last night I did a lot of tossing and turning and I wasn’t able to go straight to sleep after having watched a different kind of ‘creepy movie’. It was the investigative program Panorama and for 30 minutes it detailed every hideous detail of the baby’s life, and every shred of maladministration that condemned him to his death.
Make no mistake about it, this child never had a hope in hell of growing up – never a hope of celebrating his second birthday. He never stood a chance. I often wonder how such children manage to survive at all.
Like countless people recently I have been reading reams of print about what happened to this child and there is one thing which really grates on my nerves; it is the way the print media insist on referring to his mother as ‘the Mum’. And her boyfriend as ‘the stepDAD’ or even more abhorrently…‘her LOVER’.
The words ‘mum’ and ‘dad’ have no connection whatsoever with these two cretins – any woman can produce a baby and be a mother in the biological sense, but it takes a unique woman to be a ‘mum’. Ditto with regards to men, fathers and ‘dads’. And as for the term ‘lover’ – give us all a break please – what has love got to do with any of these people…?
Haringey Council still today refuse to admit they got it all wrong. Those social workers, and especially Sharon Shoesmith, still refuse to admit their guilt and refuse to consider resigning. Well, if they wont jump of their own accord then they have to pushed.
Little Peter’s mother is presently under protection in London’s Holloway Prison and treating everything like it is a huge laugh. She pokes her tongue out at prison guards and boasts that she will be home in time for Xmas. She gets her hair done once a fortnight at the prisons own salon…pity whoever does her hair does not make a slip with the scissors. Pity the prison does not have it’s own resident female Sweeney Todd…
Meanwhile the ashes of a little blonde haired, blue-eyed boy lay scattered in an unmarked location at a cemetery in East Finchley.
Unfortunately no-one saved little Peter from the monster in his room that night.
