Wizard of Oz revival – and Toto gets the applause!

Sometimes you have to wonder why some producers bother to try and replicate timeless classics and expect them to outshine the originals. One such example is The Wizard of Oz which is currently playing in London. And the dog, Bobbie the Westie playing Toto (pictured), is the only standout!

This eternal classic has never been bettered in contemporary formats; a few years back a film remake was made with Dorothy played by anagram-named Fairuza Balk. Anyone remember it…? no, I thought so.

The new production in London is looking at a short-run unfortunately – just as the new recent musical version of Gone with the Wind did. I am always in favour of new perspectives but, you have to admit, that there are some things which simply cannot be reproduced with any success.

The new production of Oz will not capture the public’s imagination as did the 1938 film version; and when I read of Sian Brook’s (pictured) intention to ‘play Dorothy my way’ I thought…” Uh oh, it’s doomed…” No offence intended to Sian though…

Because there really is, and only ever will be, one Dorothy – Judy Garland. I always try to keep an open mind about these things and not approach with pre-conceived ideas but this is one role where, no matter how talented, comparisons will always be made. Anyone watching this show will almost certainly be looking to experience the same magic that the film creates – and that is something which would require a small miracle to happen.

‘Magic’ in any performance is a rare and wonderful thing; but it seems there are some who make their own and then patent it. Some footsteps are impossible to follow in – except maybe Toto’s.

Total eclipse of the sun

Great excitement amongst astronomy enthusiasts today with a total solar eclipse – the centre line of the eclipse being over Siberia/China. We were at the last event in Turkey in 2006 but found the current location a bit out of the way for us to travel to.

The real die-hards will be there in force though!

We are all geared up for the partial eclipse this morning. When we were in Turkey we were issued with those little viewing glasses but somehow they have got lost since then; what we have done is buy a couple of sets of those arc welding masks – just a few pounds they cost – and they do the job brilliantly.

Don’t forget; don’t look at the sun prior to totality unless you are wearing protective eye gear especially designed for looking at the sun. Once the dun is totally eclipsed – when everything goes black around you – then you can remove the eye gear and view the wondrous and fantastic sight in the sky. It is truly a magnificent phenomena.

Once the moon starts to move away and the sun starts to peep out again – put the eye gear back on.  This is natures most brilliant miracles and one you just should not miss!
