Sometimes you have to wonder why some producers bother to try and replicate timeless classics and expect them to outshine the originals. One such example is The Wizard of Oz which is currently playing in London. And the dog, Bobbie the Westie playing Toto (pictured), is the only standout!
This eternal classic has never been bettered in contemporary formats; a few years back a film remake was made with Dorothy played by anagram-named Fairuza Balk. Anyone remember it…? no, I thought so.
The new production in London is looking at a short-run unfortunately – just as the new recent musical version of Gone with the Wind did. I am always in favour of new perspectives but, you have to admit, that there are some things which simply cannot be reproduced with any success.
The new production of Oz will not capture the public’s imagination as did the 1938 film version; and when I read of Sian Brook’s (pictured) intention to ‘play Dorothy my way’ I thought…” Uh oh, it’s doomed…” No offence intended to Sian though…
Because there really is, and only ever will be, one Dorothy – Judy Garland. I always try to keep an open mind about these things and not approach with pre-conceived ideas but this is one role where, no matter how talented, comparisons will always be made. Anyone watching this show will almost certainly be looking to experience the same magic that the film creates – and that is something which would require a small miracle to happen.
‘Magic’ in any performance is a rare and wonderful thing; but it seems there are some who make their own and then patent it. Some footsteps are impossible to follow in – except maybe Toto’s.
