Just ask Basil

I got a real laugh out of a recent article regarding a survey conducted among hotel owners in Europe. The travel company, Expedia, surveyed these people to find out which nationalities were the worst and best behaved hotel guests. And no surprises in that the British came out tops in the worst behaved category.

I have to be honest and say that in our experience, (with the exception of one particularly vile middle-aged couple), any bad behaviour on the part of our own British guests has been limited to their kids – for some reason alot of British parents have a problem with discipline. Having said that though I will say that Brit’s can be the greatest whingers about the most trivial things.

I am surprised though at the inclusion of the Russians; all the guests we have had from the soviet bloc countries have all without exception been wonderful and friendly people to play host to. The French…they basically tend to complain if your French skills are not up to theirs. And the Indians…? we had two journalists from the Bombay Times stay with us three years ago and one of them brought with him some Indian spices; he insisted on cooking us a traditional rice dish for breakfast and, being from Bombay, thought our humble abode was a palace. Wonderful guys !

We have found that the Spanish/Catalan folk generally make very fussy guests, albeit friendly, with rather high expectations for what they are actually paying for – when they ‘review’ your property their comments often venture into the realms of fantasy; we had one Spanish couple write a review on a travel site about us complaining about our “  sucia piscina ” (dirty swimming pool) and we don’t even have a swimming pool !

Yep, there are television shows and newspaper articles devoted to tourists relating their bad holiday experiences - someday hopefully we hotel owners will get our own show and then watch out :)

Fancy being a Knight or Damsel ?

Don’t you just love those fashions from the Renaissance period ?

I saw Cate Blanchett in  ‘Elizabeth’ and thought the costumes were absolutely sumptuous. Okay, they may not have been all that practical – I would assume that in the summer months those ladies in those flowing gowns and boned corsets would have perspired heavily…and they never had anti-perspirants back then.

A crowded room at a banquet in mid summer must have provided a pretty ‘ripe’ atmosphere…

Nowadays renaissance clothing is enjoying a rebirth (which is what ‘renaissance’ means) and surprisingly even brides are choosing this fashion as a theme for their weddings.  A huge number of couples are going ‘medieval’ for their big day by adding a touch of romance and something olde just for a more different experience.

Tragic lesson for Britain’s police

The shocking and tragic murder of 15 year old Arsema Dawit recently by an obsessed ‘admirer’ highlights what everyone knows – that the police need to get up off their shirt tails and do something when women complain of being stalked by lunatic men. The parents of this young girl had complained to the police several times that their daughter was receiving death threats and text messages from her stalker and yet they did nothing. Until he finally carried out his threat last week and stabbed her to death just yards from the door of her home as walked home from school.

Arsema is not the first female to die as a result of police inactivity in such a situation – numerous women have and many more will unless their complaints and fears are acted upon. I don’t have daughters, just sons, but I can honestly say that if I did have a daughter and she was in a similar situation there is no way I would leave it to useless and disinterested police to do anything about it. My daughter would only have to tell a man once to leave her alone – after that he’d be dealing with me !
