When is a British child NOT a British child…?

Answer is simple – when his father is British, his mother is Australian and he was born in the United Kingdom.  Confused? you darn well should be because I certainly am.

I saw an article today which has enraged me by reporting that 160,000 foreigners were granted British citizenship in 2007; people who were not even born there nor have any British roots at all and yet they qualify for something which our British born son has been continually denied.

Now while I think it’s great that those people feel strongly enough about their adopted country that they take out citizenship I have strong issues with the British Govt who have a law which states a British man cannot pass his nationality onto his children. As I say, I am Australian, born in a Commonwealth country and yet am officially an alien/foreigner in the UK.  My partner has generations of British ancestry and has always lived there; but simply because we are not married our son cannot be considered ‘British’. He cannot take his father’s nationality.

It smacks of discrimination for sure.

Satin and silk sheets sure are sexy but so slippery!

When the purchase of our first home together went through I was on the other side of the world visiting family so my partner had to deal with pretty much all the finer details on his own.

This included selecting and buying furniture and many of the odds and ends which go into a brand new home. Considering it was his first experience of such he carried the task off well; it took countless midnight international phone calls to discuss colours, shading, fabrics, etc, to achieve the job though. Me being phoned after midnight and him making the call from somewhere in M&S or Dunnes.

When it came to the bedding I chose from an online catalogue and he went and bought the stuff and it was during one of these expeditions that he saw something in the store which seems to be every womans fantasy – satin sheets and silk bedding.  He couldn’t resist buying a set as a surprise for me and chose a very deep shade of red. Fast forward a few weeks and we are trying out the sheets (sleeping on them I mean).

I have to say they certainly provide for an interesting experience. One difficult thing is keeping the darn things tucked in and you really do slide around on them. Getting the quilt into the cover was a job in itself due to the slippery, shiny fabric and by next morning we decided that the egyptian cotton sheets would be more practical.

However, those satin sheets certainly do get used from time to time…

Ever wondered about golf…just ask my son.

No I haven’t either actually; until my son in Australia got bitten by the golfing bug recently and now he talks about little else. Strange past time for a twenty year old beach-going Aussie guy when you think about it. William never gave this sport a seconds thought up until a few weeks back and then he caddied for his mate’s Dad and now…well…he’s boring the hell out of us with it all!!

Here are some of the things you may never have known about golf:

* The game was devised in Scotland over 500 years ago but the Chinese played a similar game around 943 AD.

* In a three-day span on a course in Wales, a mother, father and son each made a hole-in one; the odds of this feat are at least 10,000,000 to one

* The Toonik Tyme Festival in Nunavut features a nine-hole golf tournament on sea ice with fluorescent golf balls and parka-clad golfers at temperatures of –50˚C  !!

There, I’ll be that has made your day. It has made William’s day for sure…he’s now a font of somewhat useless information now. Aaahh, don;t you just love a fanatic though?
