I never thought I would ever be writing an article like this but the need arises. Once upon a time there was an Australian publication called the ‘Woman’s Day’. This mag was once a great read; recipes, tips on how to look after the home and family, updates on what was happening at home and abroad, gardening tips, celebrity news.
All that has changed. In just a few years.
This once great mag has now become a slag mag. It’s main subjects being Shane Warne; Shane Warne and his ex-wife Simone; Shane Warne and the latest female he has slept with; Shane Warnes latest female friend who wishes to ‘set the record straight’; Oprah Winfrey and anything to do with what she eats, who she lives with/works with; Nicole Kidman and the pregnancies she has never had; Jennifer Aniston and the engagements and pregnancies she has never had…get my drift?
‘Woman’s Day’ used to be an institution for Australian Women…I remember buying an issue 25 years ago and reading about Rod Stewart’s new wife back then…Penny was still in primary school at the time!.
‘Woman’s Day’ was the backbone of the Australian woman…the Aussie woman who stayed at home and raised her kids, who looked after her family. The woman who cooked; who took the dog to the vet; who pulled the weeds out of the garden; who made the costumes for the class Xmas concert; who got the grass stains out of her kids netball/rugby uniforms. The woman who cared about what she read.
Now, this once great magazine has become nothing more than an overly priced gossip rag; a publication mass produced for the masses who do not care about quality of journalism, or even accuracy of same. My sister recently picked up a bundle of very old issues from the 70′s in a second hand shop. She sent them to me here in France.
One of those old issue’s took me a week to get through…a modern day issue takes 30 minutes. At the most.
