Amy Winehouse

The latest chapter in the increasingly tragic saga of the talented UK singer Amy Winehouse has been captured on film for all to see.  And what a sad sight it is.

Photographs show this poor girl wandering the street outside her London home in the early hours of this morning clad only in her underwear and completely incoherent. ‘Amy Winehouse wanders the streets semi-naked‘ say the headlines and, of course, there she is. You have to ask; what on earth are photographers doing outside her home at 5.45am in the first place.

Anyway. This is a young girl with talent to burn. A fantastic voice that sings with a maturity way beyond it’s years. A voice that can convey pain, joy, intense love and infinate pain. At her age she should be too young to have experienced all these, but she can and did…but for how much longer?.

She is treading a dangerous path. A path well trodden by the likes of the great Billy Holiday, Edith Piaf, Judy Garland and Janis Joplin. All incredible women; all incredible singers and, tragically, all drug addicts. Their god-given talents only giving out when their own bodies gave out. And all at a relatively young age.

Amy Winehouse needs help. She is fast disappearing before our eyes and why? because of drugs. The newspapers may well document her rotting teeth, her incoherent performances and her skeletal body while acknowledging her drug addiction. But why do they not focus instead on the real cause?. And I do not refer to her new husband.

Why does the media not delve into just who is supplying this young woman with the drugs that are destroying her?. Why are Pete Doherty’s drug problems well reported but no research done into just who his suppliers are?. Celebrities get their drugs from somewhere, people. But you only ever hear about Pete, or Kate Moss, or Amy being landed in court for their troubles. The real scum escape publicity.

The real scum who supply these so-called ‘role models’ for our kids and turn them into zombies never rate a mention. I would like to see just one newspaper take the trouble to expose those who do.

Reuters Blogs: The Paris Riots

Some interesting viewpoints are being expressed on the Reuters website at the moment concerning the riots in Paris.  One blogger in particular, Tom Heneghan, has been answering one common question from readers in his post: “Why we don’t call them ‘Muslim riots’ in Paris suburbs“.

The fact that the youths involved in the recent riots were identified as being Muslim does not mean that the riots themselves were the result of religious persecution – or have been organised to promote a Muslim cause. Therefore in fact these riots are not ‘Muslim’ based and not Muslim in nature.

While I do not condone the violence recently perpetrated, especially the attacks on the police, it is clear that what is emerging from these situations is considerable unrest and disquiet in the communities these youths come from. These communities are disadvantaged socially, economically and the issue has been simmering for years now.

In this years election the French people voted in overwhelming numbers in favour of Le Pen and his xenophobic National Front Party; in some areas they voted in the majority for a man who is insistent on reintroducing policies not too far removed from those of the Nazi’s during the Occupation here in WWII. The fact that a supposedly ‘forward thinking’ people such as the French can share his ideas only sends a message out to those communities from which those rioting youths come. A message of keeping certain groups isolated and ‘in their place’.

And that message is being received loud and clear around France.

A culture where females are not being born

When the Chinese Govt introduced it’s mandatory ‘one child only’ policy some years back an insidious and evil situation slowly began to emerge. Parents, desperate for a son to support them in their old age and carry on the family line, chose to abort baby girls and, in many cases too numerous to count, even killed their female babies at birth or simply abandoned them to orphanages. A son was and still is the preferred choice in this society; daughters were simply not wanted.

The effects on Chinese society, especially in the rural areas, has been devastating in the outcome. In the past 20-25 years males have grown to outnumber females in such a way that young males there now are unmarried into their thirties and still living at home with their parents. They can find no wife, they have no children. Many cannot find work as unmarried men are viewed with suspicion. Marriage is expected within this culture. Elderly people are bemoaning their son’s pathetic lack of social status and the fact that they have no grandchildren. But who do they have to blame but themselves?.

This horrendous social disaster is also occurring in places like India where female children are just as ‘inconvenient’ to couples. Baby girls are being aborted at an alarming rate, mothers who repeatedly produce female babies are divorced in some cases – many are even killed by their husband’s family. On the same scale, in a culture where men are expected to marry, produce children and support his parents, this same culture is experiencing a severe and devastating ‘lack’ of females across the country. However, in spite of this, many parents are requesting pregnancies be terminated if a scan shows the presence of a female baby. What is even worse, is that those Asian people now living in the UK are travelling to places like India to have sex-determination scans performed and returning to the UK ‘ready to start again’. You know what I mean by that.

It is sickening, and infuriating, to know that in the 21st century there are cultures demanding not only male dominance in society but are literally preventing the very existence of females at all. Even worse is their ignorance at what will happen as a result. Just where do these couples expect their sons to find a wife in years to come?. In a culture where a female is nothing more than a financial burden, and a mark of shame who must produce a valuable ‘dowry’ to a mans family before they will accept her as his wife, they are dieliberately creating a disastrous shortfall in eligible marriage opportunities for their sons in the near future.

You would think that this would make females more ‘valuable’ in the future, but somehow I think not. A young female will simply become even more of a ‘commodity’. And a dispensible one at that.
