Hamilton Family History – Scotland to Co Donegal

One major aspect of my new soon-to-come site will the focus on the establishment of the branch of the Hamilton ‘clan’ that arrived in Co Donegal Ireland from Scotland back in the 16th century – mid to late 16th century actually.

This particular branch of the family were not plantationists but landowners – the land being granted to the original John Hamilton via King James in appreciation of the family’s loyalty to the crown.  Original settlement was Murvagh.

The family established themselves at this place before relocating to another nearby location where the family seat still stands today. Unfortunately no trace at all remains of the original dwelling, and in fact it’s exact location is not known. But having visited the area I can see that the elements have obviously played a part in that.

I will be focusing on Ballintra Co Donegal (Donegal Town pictured above) from the years of 1690 and onwards. Some of the surnames also associated with this branch of the Hamiltons are: Stewart, Pakenham, Creighton and Blackwood.

Does James speak French yet?

Well, no actually he dosen’t. We get asked this question quite often since James has been attending ecole maternelle (nursery school) for a year now and many expect that he is fluent in the language. He can come out with the ‘bonjours’ and ‘au revoirs’ alright but he is yet to say anything of substance.

Some British parents here smugly claim that their children were conversing freely in French by the age of five after a few months of ecole maternelle, but I wonder how much truth is behind those claims. It takes a good while, in my 14 year old sons case 18 months, before he could understand and speak in French. And even after 4 years here nearly he is not fluent yet. Fluency is a different thing altogether.

I would say James has some comprehension of what his teacher and little friends say to him during the day, but he is being somewhat cautious about launching his own bi-lingual skills on the local public. He is only five after all.
