Xmas away from home

We have decided that, for this year, it might be a nice change to spend Xmas in a different location other than home and we are thinking about Germany, namely Nuremburg. We have had several German guests this season and when we asked them where the ideal place to spend Xmas in Germany is they all answered Nuremburg.

I would like somewhere with some real Xmas atmosphere and this city looks fantastic for that, especially with the Christkindlesmarkt.  Our recent guests have told us that the last few years have not been too cold at Xmas there and it is the most wonderful family atmosphere with the lights and the markets that are held especially at this time. The only thing is we will have to book our accommodation pretty quick smart as this place is a very popular destination for tourists at Xmas time.

It will make a change from freezing to death here though, plus having to take the phone off the hook, and having to slave in the kitchen. It will be a treat to walk into a nice hotel dining room and have my Xmas dinner cooked for me and served to me. I’m looking forward to it!.

A holiday for everyone

Posted under Family Life, Travel, health/lifestyle by Wendy on August 24th, 2007 9:12 am

When it’s time to start thinking about that next holiday for the family there are some things to consider: location; comfort; entertainment for the kids; entertainment for Mum and Dad (of course); activities and the chance to relax as well. Try finding somewhere that offers all that…at Big Bear Lake with Big Bear winter cabins in Southern California you certainly will.

There you will find everything that will keep you and your family on the go for your entire stay, amenities to suit everyone and no shortage at all of things to do and all in a stunning environment. The best way to enjoy a stay at Big Bear Lake is to rent one of the Summit Ridge Cabin. This cabin is brand new to and ready to go. It is located within easy reach of the Ski resort and close to the lake, park and village.

Summit Ridge Cabin comes perfectly equipped to keep any family or group comfortable and cosy during their stay with brilliant features such as DVD, cable TV, full sized beds in the rooms plus a games room with a pool table!. This sounds perfect for my family and it would certainly suit any family or group that want a holiday that offers lots of outdoor pursuits with the added bonus of a great place to come home to at the end of a busy and fun day out.  This cabin can accommodate up to ten people so get the family, or some friends together, and get out to Big Bear Lake.

Family history - Reid/Reynolds NSW

Posted under Genealogy, Leisure by Wendy on August 24th, 2007 9:10 am

I’m going to really push the genealogy subject more as I go along these days as it was a past-time that I really enjoyed a while back. Lately other things in my life have pushed this into the background a bit but I’m going to re-introduce it again into my life and get some things active again. Namely. my Dad’s family line which I don’t have enough of at the moment.

Much of my Mum’s line is well documented as she is descended from English/Irish aristocracy so most of her forebears are in the history books. But Dad’s side has proved to be a bit more complicated so far. Hence I am going to delve more into his family.

My Dad, George Reynolds Reid, was born at Kogarah NSW to George Albert Reid and Berenice Wagner Reynolds in 1912. he was the second youngest child in a family that would have numbered 13 had his elder siblings all survived. His Mum, Berenice gave birth to 13 babies: the eldest was my Aunt Doris and she lived until 1993, Dad was the second youngest and he and Doris were the only children to survive.  The youngest child, James (Jimmy) died at the age of six in a tragic accident at home.

Dad’s father, George, worked the railways and his Mum, Berenice, was from Forbes in NSW. Her Father was Charles Reynolds and he was the editor of the first newspaper published in Forbes. Her mother - I do not know her first name as yet - was a ‘Wagner’ and she was descended from German stock who boasted opera singers in her family back in Germany. This, I suspect, is where Dad got his musical talent.

In 1937 Dad married his first wife, Hilda Fitton, and they had 3 children; Lawrence, Faye and Pamela - I have had no contact with these half-siblings at all.  He divorced Hilda in 1948 and married my Mum, June, in 1954.

The fReid family lived at Auburn where Dad went to school and where his father died in 1948. His mother, Berenice, died in 1956 in Brisbane.

Any help on this would be appreciated.
