Aussie school leads the way

One of my memories about going to school in Australia in the 70′s is when we were given a bottle of fresh milk to drink each morning at assembly. I hated it. I cannot stand straight milk and often the crates were left in the sun so that when you took your bottle the milk was retchingly warm. But we had to do it. We had to line up and each take a bottle and stand and drink it. Only those who had an allergy were excused.

Those days are gone, thanks to the Labor Party of the time. No more free nutritious milk for school kids. But now, an Australian primary school in Victoria is bringing back the idea of encouraging kids to eat healthy food by giving out free fruit each Friday. Obesity levels in children are at peak levels and one way, maybe, of combatting this is by giving them some fruit to eat and encouraging them to enjoy it. Lets face it, some parents never bother to buy fresh fruit for their children. When I was at school often we would have an orange/apple or mandarin for our recess snack. These days the kids munch their way through fatty crisps and tooth-rotting sugary sweets. Not to mention pies and pizza’s.

I hope the parents really get behind this scheme and encourage their kid’s to as well.  Usually, good habits should begin at home, but in this instance, it is beginning at the school.
